August Meetup

Hello all,

Last month's meetup at the Bay Creek Paddling Center was a blast! There were only 3 of us there but it was the original 3 who have been there from the begining so we had fun, relaxing time. For less then $20 for kayak rental & an hour and a half paddle it was well worth it.

July has flown by waaaay too fast and with August starting tomorrow I wondering how fast the rest of the summer is going to fly by. Recently while researching online I came across the Natural Building Networks apprenticeship page http://nbnetwork.org/topic/events/apprenticeship. This is a GREAT resource to finding workshops in natural building of all kinds.....some even pay you! So starting Aug 2nd, I will be heading to South Carolina for a 2 weeks to help out on a strawbale build. I plan to make some postings & pictures of the progress as we go. The home is currently 60 or 70% finished with much of the work being inside the structure. The owner is going with 9" bales for all his interior walls and trying a few different plasters, can't wait. I hope this prompts more people to check out the forum and to come back often. Let me know your thoughts or questions.

So for this month's meetup I will not be able to plan anything but luckily there are a some really intersting events going on around town for all interests.

First, Green Drinks - every 3rd Thursday they hold the sustainable social libation event that is always well attended (more info at http://www.ceinfo.org/ugbn/ ).

Other events held by our sponsor; Center for Sustainable Living

July Meetup

Hello all,
The last Green Drinks event was a great time! We had about 15 people who had some very interesting backgrounds and conversations. If you haven't been it is a great experience to network & meet new people who are interested in similar topics. This month's green drinks event will be on a new time at a new place....6 pm at Chocolate and Vines 757 University Avenue Rochester, NY 14607 Phone: 585.340.6362. Kimie and Jamie Romeo are the current co/coordinators for the group. If you are an environmental enthusiast in the Greater Rochester area you probably know one or both. You also likely know this means our speakers/topics will be lively and networking opportunities plentiful. Kimie and Jamie encourage businesses to sponsor food at the events and are busy prospecting a few favorite gathering spots, as well as some key speakers. Chocolate & Vines offers artisan chocolates, European desserts, and a build-your-own gourmet cheese plate - all carefully chosen to pair with over 75 wines and beers available. Delightful organic, fair trade teas and french pressed coffees served.

So after speaking with the friendly staff over at Bay Creek Paddling Center (http://www.baycreek.c...) we have a few options. You can bring your own Kayak if you have one and launch off their docks for a $5 docking fee and paddle around the bay. For rentals I think it works out to $12 an hour. There is the option of taking shuttle bus to Ellison Park to put in for a 2.5 hour trip back to Baycreek. I think the paddling around the bay would work best for most of the group but we can always do the 2.5 hr trip if people want to do it! Please RSVP with Bay Creek for the 22nd if you plan to go cause spots fill up quick. Also, If you could let Rochester Green Living know by RSVP @ http://www.meetup.com.... Please feel free to call Peter at 585 200 0526 with any other questions or suggestions about the trip. Thanks!

Cheers,

Peter

June Meetup

Hello All,

Sorry for the delay in response to last weekend's 2 day Cordwood Workshop here in Elba, all my free time has gone into the continued building of the structure....but it's a labor of love.  Anyways, the workshop was a huge success. We ended up with about 15 people total from all over New York state and most of our students were women! The presentations, pictures, stories, food and of course, hands-on cordwood time were all spectacular. To see pics from the workshop please visit out Facebook page (link below & to the right)...more pics coming soon including our group pics! We got more than half of the guesthouse complete while getting in a large window frame, 6 bottle ends, a leaf, and a pointing knife stuck out of the wall for a hook. The students were varied in backgrounds & building experience but all came together to build something that will last for lifetimes to come.

For this month’s event I was trying to put together a Kayak trip but I am postponing this till next month as I am working to cross promote the event with another organization so stay tuned for that! So for June’s Meetup we will be at the Green Drinks event on Thursday, June 24th @ 6pm at the Tap & Mallet Bar on Gregory St. We always have a great time & meet sustainable-minded attendees. Also, I will be putting an earth roof on the cordwood guesthouse as soon as I finish the walls (as they will be carrying the hefty roof load). UPDATE:Unfortunately, the weather has not participated enough in the past few weeks for me to get too much more cordwooding done to be able to host the earth roof event at my home in Elba NY on Saturday, June 19th. I will need to delay the event till July but again, this will be another FREE event and I will post the date ASAP. Please call me at 585 200 0526 if you are interested in attending this free/donation-appreciated event and/or the Kayak trip.

Cheers,

Peter
