Rochester is going loca! … Local that is. September is Localvore Month and it’s catching on! Rochester, NY – It’s very encouraging. Localism is catching on, with more and more people and organizations becoming aware of the benefits of consuming locally-grown food, as well as supporting locally owned businesses. Why not celebrate?
September is Localvore Month, and it’s really catching on. This year, there are an abundance of opportunities for Rochesterians to enjoy locally grown food and become localvores for a day, a week or all month long, sponsored by Abundance Cooperative Market, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County (CCEMC), Foodlink, NOFA-NY (Northeast Organic Farmers Association of NY), and the Center for Sustainable Living. These groups are working in cooperation to bring you a variety of events to chose from:
1. Abundance Cooperative Market’s 2nd Annual Market Passport program runs September 1st and runs through September 30th. The program aims to support area farmers markets and make it more fun for shoppers to buy and eat local. Pick up a free Farmers Market Passport card at Abundance or any of the ten participating farmers markets*, and use it to track market purchases until September 30th. Redeem your fully stamped passport at Abundance for a free gift and chance to win $100 worth of groceries! Passport cards must be dropped off at Abundance Co-op Market, 62 Marshall Street, Rochester no later than October 7. 2. Come to Cornell Cooperative Extension, 249 Highland Avenue, to kick off the month at their 2nd annual Localvore Fair, Saturday September 4th, 11am – 2pm. The fair includes activities for kids, with zucchini race cars, a veggie art display as well as herb gardening and other information available for adults. 3. Foodlilnk’s Festival of Food at the Rochester Public Market is Monday, September 20th, 5pm-8pm. . Enjoy unlimited tastings from over 100 local restaurants, wineries, breweries, bakeries and farms sampling the best food and drink in the region Tickets are $40 in advance or $50 at the door http://www.foodlinkny.org/festivaloffood.aspx
4. NOFA-NY is offering opportunities to join in for one day, one week or all month with its Localvore Challenge. For a small fee to participate, they provide some great resources and information including: suggested menu items, recipes, and list of in season foods and pantry items. 5. The Center for Sustainable Living is holding a Locafest at Genesee Valley Park’s Round House Pavilion on Sunday, September 26th, 1-5pm. Peter Turkow from Rochester Green Living will be doing a presentation on COrdwood construction and other natural building techniques. 6. Why Eat Local? There are many benefits to eating locally produced food.
